Luton Town ended QPR’s five-match unbeaten run as they produced one of the most comfortable football scores of the weekend in the Championship. Since moving back up to the Championship, the Hatters have lost all six of their games against their opponents from west London; their previous league victory came in January 2006. However, after a strong showing from Nathan Jones’ team, that was about to change.
Henri Lansbury set up James Bree right outside the box for the first serious attempt, but Bree sliced wide. On minute 19, Elijah Adebayo’s cross narrowly missed Allan Campbell’s head. Carlton Morris recovered the loose ball and found the crouching Adebayo, who headed the ball across the goal line from a yard out. In search of a second, Luton came close on 38 minutes when they nearly increased their advantage from a set piece after Henri Lansbury mishit his volley on the angle.
Bree first found Morris with a low ball, and Morris’ effort was superbly blocked by a Rangers defender covering him. Then, Bree found Adebayo, who was incredibly unlucky to have his soaring header hit the inside of the post and bounce out. Ilias Chair lined up a 25-yard free kick just before the half and shot straight at Ethan Horvath, who easily handled.
With 13 minutes left, Jones’ substitutions paid off when Jerome stripped Rob Dickie of the ball. When Seny Dieng raced out, the goalkeeper could only fire his clearance against Dunne, and the rebound bounced over the goal line. Horvath subsequently stopped Taylor Richards’ low 20-yard shot, but as stoppage time approached, Rangers got one back when the ball bounced in off the goalie. Luton scored a third goal just as things were starting to get tense, with Cornick finding Freeman to tap the ball home and secure the victory.
