Hull City lost their fifth straight game as Luton Town produced one of the comfortable football scores of the weekend in the Championship. Alfie Jones’ unlucky own goal gave the visitors the perfect start, while Henri Lansbury’s stunning long-range effort put an end to the Hatters’ nearly four-and-a-half-year goal drought and finally sealed the triumph.
Hull, who have now given up the second-most goals of any team in the top four divisions of English football (23) remain in 20th place with 11 points from 11 games, while Luton advances to fifth ahead of the remaining games this weekend. After Arveladze left, it seemed unlikely that Hull would produce a convincing victory, but there was undoubtedly pressure on the Tigers to demonstrate some early grit. However, just six minutes had passed when the MKM experienced a recognizable sense of hopelessness.
Although Elijah Adebayo was unmarked when Lansbury’s corner was delivered, it didn’t matter since the striker’s ferocious shot hit the crossbar and landed on Jones’ foot before the defender had a chance to pull the ball away and stop it from going over the goal line. To be fair, Hull’s comeback was brilliant; they dominated possession and drove Luton back into their own half. Before Regan Slater’s long-range shot took a deflection, struck the underside of the bar, and bounced to safety, Ryan Longman sent a shot flying an inch over.
When Morris collapsed to the ground after Jacob Greaves had taken a grip of his opponent’s shirt with just over an hour left, Luton called for a penalty, but referee James Linington was unconcerned. But in the end, it made no difference to the outcome. As the second half went on, Hull increased the pressure, but aside from half-chances for Ozan Tufan and Cyrus Christie – and with top scorer Oscar Estupinan getting just 16 touches – the clean sheet was hardly in doubt.
