Aaron Mooy scored from the penalty spot to help Celtic produce one of the most comfortable football scores of the weekend in the Scottish Premiership. Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Celtic, won his 50th Scottish Premiership game in just 61 games; only Martin O’Neill (59 games) reached that milestone faster for Celtic. The Hoops were frustrated until Jota headed in from a tight angle in the 51st minute to start the scoring on their most recent trip to Tannadice, where they secured their biggest-ever away league win with a 9-0 victory. Five minutes later, Mooy doubled the advantage from the penalty spot after United defender Kieran Freeman handled in the area as a result of a VAR check.
Both teams were missing strikers with pending transfers: Tony Watt of United and Giorgos Giakoumakis of Celtic, but Greg Taylor and Cameron Carter-Vickers of the champions made their injury comebacks. At Tannadice, Jota threatened three times after cutting in from the left, causing Mark Birighitti to make two saves. Kyogo Furuhashi was then passed through by Alistair Johnston, who made a superior-stop. Subsequently, in the 42nd minute, Reo Hatate hit the far post, and Celtic was then given a penalty after Furuhashi was brought down by Birighitti’s punched clearing. Six minutes after the restart, Celtic seized the lead when Jota headed in from a very tight angle at the back post after Mooy’s cross sailed over Birighitti’s head.
Five minutes later, Robertson awarded a penalty after consulting the monitor for a handball against Freeman when Jota’s ball into the box struck the defender’s hand, and VAR then went in the visitors’ favor. Mooy’s sixth goal in seven games was a mistake from fellow Australian Birighitti. Hyeon-Gyu Oh, a recent addition to Celtic, then made his game debut off the bench in the 82nd minute, while fellow replacement Daizen Maeda scored the game’s final goal with a three-yard header.
