Viktor Gyokeres scored a brace to help Coventry produce one of the most comfortable football scores of the weekend in the Championship. Despite being 22nd in the standings before their recent winning streak, the Swede capitalized on Jamie Allen’s misplaced kick to score past Seny Dieng and then tapped in Callum O’Hare’s pass to put Coventry just two points out of the playoffs. In addition, the Sky Blues made sure none of their four victories involved goals conceded by recording their ninth shutout in 12 games. In contrast, QPR suffered their third straight loss as a result of Gyokeres’ double-handed Michael Beale goal, dropping out of the playoff spots.
Gyokeres’ third goal in as many games was the result of O’Hare’s perseverance and good fortune. Ethan Laird and the midfielder duked it out on the left until the on-loan Manchester United defender’s clearance bounced off Laird and dropped to Allen. Allen was on hand to calm himself down and then finish off the crossbar for his eighth goal of the year even if he was unable to produce the finish himself for the Sky Blues. Josh Eccles’ misdirected pass from O’Hare and Gustavo Hamer’s saved header gave Coventry a threat in the first half.
On the half-hour mark, Gyokeres was once more found by O’Hare and came close to scoring again, but Dieng easily saved the former Brighton player’s shot. After the break, the Hoops had much more possession, but Dickie’s piledriver presented Ben Wilson with his hardest test, forcing him to make an outstanding save. However, the Sky Blues remained a threat on the break as Kyle McFadzean started Coventry off before finding Gyokeres, but the defender’s shot was saved. For the first time in nearly 20 years, Gyokeres scored with 12 minutes remaining to give Coventry their fourth straight victory in the second tier.
