Nathan Tella scored his fifth goal of the season to help Burnley produce one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the Championship. The loanee from Southampton scored in the opening period to earn the Clarets just their second victory in six games while continuing their unbeaten streak. Coventry, who lost for the first time in five league games, is still at the bottom of the standings. The most significant of Burnley’s three substitutions were in goal, when Bailey Peacock-Farrell replaced the injured Aro Muric for the first time since May 2021, and summer signing Anass Zaroury received his first Clarets start in lieu of Manuel Benson.
For Vincent Kompany’s team against the team he played for last season on loan from Chelsea, Ian Maatsen started at left-back once again, forcing Vitinho to go to right-back and Connor Roberts to the bench. The only change for Coventry was the substitution of Tyler Walker for Matty Godden, who received his second start of the year. Burnley took early possession control in the teams’ first encounter since 2012 and had the first half-chance through Josh Cullen, who scuffed his half-volley beyond after Kyle McFadzean cleared a cross from Maatsen.
On the hour mark, Robins made a lineup change, bringing on Michael Rose, Josh Eccles, Fabio Tavares, and Godden, choosing a 4-3-3 formation to try to get back into the game. However, Burnley appeared to have a better chance of securing the second and avoiding adding to their current total of 10 points dropped from winning positions this year. Vitinho was at the back post when Zaroury’s cross arrived, but his header wasn’t quite accurate enough for Rodriguez to get a shot off within the six-yard box.
Brownhill was subsequently spotted in the middle of the field by goal scorer Tella, who then slipped in Belgian winger Zaroury. However, the summer acquisition could only curl past Wilson’s far post. With five minutes left, Todd Kane, who had not played for the Sky Blues since the final day of the previous season, came close for the home team but his shot went wide of Peacock-Farell’s goal.
