Nathan Broadhead scored to give Wigan their first home win of the season as they produced one of the narrow football results of the weekend in the Championship. At the DW Stadium, Everton loanee Broadhead scored just after the hour mark to give the Latics the victory. For Blackburn, it extended a remarkable run of results in which their last nine games have all ended in victories or defeats. They dropped out of the running to enter the top six.
First-half opportunities of any genuine quality were few and far between, but Thomas Kaminski was without a doubt the busier of the goalies as he was forced into action to stop Broadhead and Will Keane. Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson made three early substitutions in an effort to find a breakthrough, but Wigan’s pressure paid off at the 62-minute mark when they seized the lead. Keane was able to get the ball into the box thanks to Tyler Morton’s blunder. Kaminski managed to stop his attempt, but he could only push it into Broadhead’s path, who guided the ball into an open goal.
“In light of the honesty and effort the guys were putting forth, I believed the outcome of the game tonight to be fair. At one point, we believed that these nights would never return to the DW. We performed admirably, in my opinion, and we deserved the outcome tonight. Given that we are new to the division, I’m glad that we are competitive. Most of our guys are from League One, and we’re excited about the challenge,” Wigan boss Leam Richardson said.
“The players felt their performance was dismal, and the outcome was disheartening as well. We handled the first and second balls nicely, but today we made much too many errors. I find it surprising that the goal was allowed because Morton ought to have been given a free kick. A draw would have ordinarily been the appropriate outcome because the game offered limited opportunities,” Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson said.
