Burnley came back from two goals down to produce one of the high-scoring football results of the weekend in the Championship. Amad Diallo and Dan Neil scored in rapid succession to give the Black Cats a 2-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes of the game, giving them a commanding early advantage. Burnley, though, demonstrated their promotion credentials by turning the game around after the break while Sunderland hoped for just their second victory in seven games. Before fellow Belgians Manuel Benson and Anass Zaroury, who are on loan from Southampton and are teammates of Vincent Kompany, put the visitors on track for a perfect score in the 61st and 69th minutes, Nathan Tella, who is also from Belgium, drew one back in the 50th minute. With three minutes left, Burnley’s skipper Josh Brownhill still had time to secure another victory for his team, which is now third while Sunderland is currently in thirteenth place.
The first goal was scored by Diallo just after the first quarter-hour. The on-loan Manchester United winger, who scored three goals while on loan at Rangers last season, was given enough room in the penalty box and used a deft side-foot from 14 yards out to side-foot past Arijanet Muric. That opportunity came about as a result of Sunderland’s effort in the final third, and Alex Pritchard’s initial run from the left gave Jack Clarke the chance to seize control and find 20-year-old Diallo with the pass.
Both ends had a few opportunities, but Burnley felt they had more. Benson, the substitute who had been brought on, cut inside and clipped into the area, and just after the hour mark, the ball escaped everyone and bounced inside the far corner of the net to tie the score. Zaroury made it 3-2 with 21 minutes left when he cut through from the left and curled wonderfully inside the far corner, beating Anthony Patterson hands down. After Neil had been robbed in his own half, Burnley’s captain Brownhill made sure it was over with a crisp finish late in the game.
