George Baldock scored the match-winner as Sheffield United produced one of the narrow football results of the weekend in the Championship. George Baldock’s goal in the 64th minute was enough for the visitors to win all three points. After a slow first 20 minutes, Cardiff had control of much of the first half, with the front three of the Bluebirds creating plenty of problems on the counterattack. As the half progressed, the home team continued to have numerous opportunities but failed to take advantage of many of them. Although the visitors missed a number of excellent chances to take the lead before Baldock fired a powerful shot past the hapless Ryan Allsop, the Blades were able to gain control thanks to the halftime substitution of James McAtee.
After Callum O’Dowda received a superb long pass from goalie Allsop, the hosts had the game’s first opportunity. Callum Robinson’s feeble attempt to score from the ensuing cross was cleared over the bar. Perry Ng had to make two last-ditch clearances because Billy Sharp was giving United a way to get back into the game. Cardiff, however, persisted in creating problems on the break, and they came close once more when O’Dowda looped in a gorgeous cross. However, Robinson’s attempt missed the target because he was unable to make the desired contact with his head.
When Baldock stole the ball from Kipre and unleashed a powerful shot that beat Allsop at his near post, the pressure eventually became too much. Following the score, the visitors grabbed control of the game, and Bluebirds manager Mark Hudson attempted to retaliate by bringing on Rubin Colwill and Sheyi Ojo. However, the Blades kept up their dominance, and Cardiff hardly ever posed a threat in the waning minutes. Late in the game, Ben Osborn had an opportunity to win it, but Allsop made an outstanding save to save the well-hit shot of the 28-year-old. When Ojo gained space in the box and attempted to score late on, the hosts’ strike almost missed the target.
