Aberdeen has confirmed the appointment of Barry Robson as the interim manager following the sacking of Jim Goodwin. As the team searches for a new permanent manager, development phase manager Robson will be supported by development phase coach Scott Anderson and Steve Agnew, with whom he previously worked at Middlesbrough. Prior to St Mirren’s visit to Pittodrie in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday, the interim coaching staff will hold their first practice on Monday. An update on the search for a new manager will be communicated in due course, according to Aberdeen, who is seated seventh at the table.
“The team was quickly put together by the club to oversee first-team matters until a new manager was chosen,” Aberdeen said in a statement after the appointment of Barry Robson. “Barry and his coaching staff will have the full support of the entire club as they work relentlessly to get the team back on track to achieving our goal of competing in Europe next season.”
Following a humiliating 1-0 Scottish Cup loss to sixth-tier team Darvel on Monday, Goodwin was under intense pressure. Before Saturday’s 6-0 thumping at Hibernian, the board had warned Goodwin that they “wanted an immediate response” following the defeat at the West of Scotland League Premier Division champions. Just 19 minutes after the Easter Road game’s conclusion, the club confirmed the departure of the 41-year-old.
“Jim Goodwin and first-team assistant manager Lee Sharp have been fired by the club with immediate effect following a string of poor results since the World Cup break,” the statement added.
The Dons attempted to bolster Pittodrie during the transfer window by bringing in defenders and a goalie. Ajax’s Jay Gorter has been offered a loan by Aberdeen to join the squad for the remainder of the current season. Even if a pre-contract offer for Go Ahead Eagles center-back Jay Idzes was declined, Aberdeen and his agent are still in talks. Aberdeen has won just one of their past ten games overall, dropping them to seventh place in the Scottish Premiership.
