Coventry ended a run of nine successful away defeats as they produced one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the Championship. Due to issues they encountered at the beginning of the season using the Coventry Building Society Arena, Mark Robins’ team’s 1-0 victory brought them closer to their relegation rivals with games remaining.
When home goalkeeper Ryan Allsop completely botched a clearance kick, leaving Swedish striker Gyokeres with an open goal to shoot at, Coventry almost received the perfect start. Allsop and his defenders were able to breathe a sigh of relief as his shot missed the goal despite being set up and ready to strike. Cardiff needed that wake-up call, and they responded well when they faced the team at the bottom of the table.
Callum Robinson was able to get a shot off thanks to a short corner kick from Ryan Wintle. The Republic of Ireland striker was then sent racing into the center, but his shot just missed the goal post. The Bluebirds kept forward and appeared to have a better chance of scoring as they sought to extend their unbeaten streak under interim manager Mark Hudson to four games. Coventry scored in the 34th minute after they were hit on the break.
To the right of the box, Jamie Allen received a forward pass from Matt Godden, and Allsop barely managed to parry his effort away. Gyokeres was on hand to make up for his previous error and tap in the loose ball, which was only two yards from the home goal. The Bluebirds had trailed just twice in their previous four games under Hudson, and whatever the new manager said at halftime, it undoubtedly motivated his team. Coventry nearly scored again after making another rapid break down the right, but Allsop expertly deflected Jake Bidwell’s header from the penalty spot.
