UEFA has revealed that there have no plans to shift the semi-finals and the finals of Euro 2020 from the Wembley Arena. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and German chancellor Angela Merkel had both expressed their concerns. The former wanted the final to be shifted to Rome due to the rising cases in England.
“Yes. I will try to stop the final being held in a country where infections are rising quickly.” Italy prime minister Draghi said. “I advocate that the final should not take place in a country in which the risk of infection is very big.”
On Monday, Italy had just one death and less than 500 new cases. On the other hand, England reported five deaths and more than 10,000 new cases. There have been talks held between the UEFA and the British Government to increase the attendance for the finals to 65,000.
“UEFA, the English FA and the English authorities are working closely together successfully to stage the semi-finals and final of EURO 2020 at Wembley and there are no plans to change the venue for those games.” UEFA said in a statement.
Billy Gilmour is the latest player to return a positive coronavirus test. The rest of the squad all tested negative. Two English players Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount who were in close proximity to Gilmour are self-isolating. Scotland captain Liam Cooper admitted the loss of Billy Gilmour will be a bitter pill to swallow.
