Scotland manager Steve Clarke said that the loss of teenager Billy Gilmour is a big loss for them at Euro 2020. They take on World Cup runners-up Croatia in a winner takes all battle on Tuesday. He turned heads against England and won the Man of the Match award in the 0-0 draw. On Sunday, he returned a positive coronavirus test and will now be required to self-isolate for 10 days.
“He’s upset, as you would expect. He has no symptoms, hopefully, his health will hold up. Hopefully, he’ll get back to playing as quickly as possible.” Scotland boss Clarke said before their final group game in Euro 2020. “Obviously a blow for us but a chance for someone else. Billy would have started the game and now he won’t, so it’s a chance for someone else to come into the team and make themselves a national hero.”
The Scottish FA revealed that the rest of the squad all passed lateral flow tests after Gilmour tested positive. UEFA has not instructed Scotland to put any of its players into self-isolation. Clarke said it was only a slight distraction for their preparation as all the hard work was done in the training camp and rest days.
“It’s not my department. My department is getting the team ready for a massive game against Croatia and that’s what I have been concentrating on.” Clarke said when asked about protocols. “Obviously, training was a little bit disrupted but the bulk of the work has been done over the pre-camp and the training days earlier in the tournament.”
