Eric Cantona revealed that Man United snubbed his offer to become President of football. Cantona offered his services before Ed Woodward left his position in 2021. He wanted to preside over football matters at the club while the boardroom associates could take care of the marketing aspect of the club. Man United have been in disarray ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013 with their two rivals Manchester City and Liverpool dominating the league.
“I suggested to the club last year that they alter their practices. I then suggested to them that I be elected football’s president. Ed Woodward excels at marketing but struggles in the football game. First, United should have a chairman, then a president of marketing, and finally a president of football, who is in control of all football-related decisions,” former Man United captain Eric Cantona said. “Woodward and I had a few encounters. However, they rejected it! I still believe that I, or someone else, need a football player. It should be a member of the team who is familiar with both the team and football. But they objected to my being the club’s president! I was not wanted by them. And the supporters need to be aware that I went to Manchester to offer them a chance to succeed in the ensuing decades. And they were opposed to it!”
“I felt bad for not making an effort to assist this group in improving. I told myself, for the next five years, I’m going to put everything on wait and focus solely on that,” he added. “And I can assure you that if I put all of my attention into that, I would succeed admirably. I now feel confident in myself. I did. Therefore, no one in my family can claim that I did not make any effort to aid United. They were opposed to it. It’s their decision. But I gave it a go.”
