Wolves winger Gonzalo Guedes signed this season and has reunited with his former manager Bruno Lage in the Premier League. Before making the decision, Guedes, who had 11 goals in 36 appearances for Valencia the previous season, had a long conversation with Lage. He also consulted the club’s numerous Portuguese speakers, many of whom he is familiar with from his time playing for the nation’s national team.
The 25-year-old’s performance has been dismissed, with only one win from seven games leaving Wolves in the 17th spot in the Premier League, two points above the relegation zone, with only three goals scored. He has so far only displayed glimmers of his enormous skill. Guedes missed out on the most recent Portugal squad to play the Czech Republic and Spain in the Nations League due to the challenging start to the year. His sadness at not being called up was, however, somewhat mitigated by the chance to spend the international break catching up after missing the Wolves’ preseason.
There is no questioning Guedes’ offensive skills, namely his pace, one-on-one proficiency, and propensity for stunning goals. But it is acknowledged that in the hectic back and forth of the Premier League, his off-the-ball work needs to significantly improve. Diego Costa, a former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid striker who joined on a free transfer earlier this month, gives Guedes a new objective to strive for. Gonzalo Guedes is more than capable of creating danger from those areas by cutting inside and pushing toward the opponent’s box for Wolves.
