QPR head coach Mick Beale has turned down an approach from Wolves for their vacant manager position. Beale, 42, a former Steven Gerrard assistant at Rangers and Aston Villa, was officially granted permission to speak to the Premier League underachievers by the Championship leaders, but he will stay at QPR. Wolves had examined a number of managers, including Nuno Esprito Santo, who oversaw Molineux from 2017 to 2021, and former Lyon manager Peter Bosz, but they were intrigued by Beale’s rising profile and potential. Since then, they have confirmed that interim head coach Steve Davis will hold the position through 2023.
“It was an honor to be asked to meet with Wolves, a terrific football team, but I didn’t feel it was the proper time given that I had just signed an agreement here,” QPR head coach Mick Beale said. “Integrity and loyalty are important to me, and if you live by these principles, you must be strong. I have put everything on the line here and have asked others to do the same, therefore I cannot be the first person to abandon the ship.”
The 3-0 victory over Cardiff on Wednesday night sent QPR to the top of the Championship, and although Beale later acknowledged that managing in the Premier League would be a “dream,” he does not want to abandon the task. Tuesday’s 2-1 setback at Crystal Palace, Wolves’ fifth loss of the year, saw them fall into the Premier League’s relegation zone without a permanent head coach.
