Liverpool winger Luis Diaz has suffered a setback on his road to recovery from his calf injury. Diaz was training for his comeback during the Reds’ warm-weather camp after suffering a knee injury in Liverpool’s 3-2 loss at Arsenal on October 9. In the 12 games the Colombian international appeared in before getting hurt, he scored four goals and provided three assists. Before the World Cup break, Liverpool was able to manage Diaz’s absence, winning eight of the ten games he was unable to attend. As a result, they advanced to the round of 16 in both the Champions League and the Carabao Cup, while also finishing sixth in the Premier League.
“He wasn’t in the ideal situation. It’s obvious that it’s a huge disappointment for both him and for the rest of us,” Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp said about Luis Diaz. “In all honesty, it was a non-situation during training. Nothing [until] he experienced a feeling. The following day, [he] didn’t feel like himself much, but we wanted to be extremely cautious, so we said, ‘OK, come on, let’s have a look.’ Then the news broke, which was a real kick in the face. But for now, that’s it. Before we scored, Harvey took a blow, but I believe we were fortunate. Although he appears to be OK right now, he still feels it. Although there was interaction, I believe we were fortunate at the time.”
With Diogo Jota presently out with a calf injury, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Roberto Firmino are the only senior forwards available to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool following the recent injury to Diaz. Additionally, the manager will have access to attacking reinforcements from his team in the form of Fabio Carvalho, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Elliott left the game in the 29th minute of Liverpool’s 3-1 loss to Lyon in a friendly match, but Klopp had better news on Elliott’s health.
