Pep Guardiola claims it is only a matter of time before Ruben Dias takes over as captain of Manchester City.
Since joining the Premier League champions from Benfica last September, Dias has been outstanding. The 24-year-old was recently named Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year for his efforts in the City backline, and his coach has been surprised by his promising start to life in England.
Guardiola Praises Ruben Dias
Dias outstanding season was praised by Guardiola.
He said, “To be honest, I wasn’t expecting it. We knew he was good, but you never know what can happen. It’s a challenge if a defender plays by himself, so he’s always worried about his central defensive partner, his holding midfielder, and even the wingers. He’s incredibly gracious, and he’s a consummate professional. He is also so young that he spends 24 hours daydreaming about football.
I’m pretty sure his teammates and backroom staff will select him as one of the captains in a short time, maybe I’m wrong, but he’s proved he can lead. He’s a person who is always willing to assist in a crisis, and he’s a communicator both on and off the field. He’s a boss. It is not offered to you by the club to be a leader; it comes from inside, and it is normal. He’s always curious about how he should improve. That’s why he’ll be successful.”
City has already clinched the Premier League title before their final game of the season.
On Sunday, Pep Guardiola’s side hosts Everton at the Etihad Stadium in their final domestic match of the 2020-21 season. After that, they’ll focus on the Champions League final against Chelsea on May 29.
