Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes that Trent Alexander-Arnold needs to work on his defense after yet another poor defensive display. Jurgen Klopp passionately defended his right-back last week, whose World Cup ambitions appeared to be hanging by a thread, but he now acknowledges that England manager Gareth Southgate has a different style of play. Liverpool has endured a disappointing start to the Premier League season.
The 23-year-old was selected for the two Nations League games against Italy and Germany, but he did not make the roster for either of them. As a result of his alleged defensive shortcomings, he has been compared to Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier, Chelsea’s Reece James, and Manchester City’s Kyle Walker in discussions about why he cannot play for his country. In Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Anfield, Brighton once again exposed these, and Neville thinks the imbalance in his game needs to be corrected.
“Trent Alexander-Arnold was a major topic during Jurgen Klopp’s press conference, and I watched the goals against Brighton. Despite Klopp’s defense, I think he was involved in all three of Brighton’s goals on Saturday,” Gary Neville said about Trent Alexander-Arnold. “He still astounds me with three or four really basic full-back technique elements when I watch him play. Because I was a poor full-back when I was 20 years old, I am able to instruct people on these abilities every day. We now understand that being a full-back in today’s game requires the ability to move forward.”
