James Tavernier scored a late equalizer to help Rangers produce one of the close football scores of the weekend in the Premier League. Rangers had a tonne of possession, but St Mirren wanted to extend their home unbeaten league streak to eight games and Jonah Ayunga smashed home the opening goal at the second attempt. Following a VAR review that determined Ryan Kent was brought down by Ryan Strain just inside the area, Tavernier scored the equaliser from the spot. In the final seconds as Rangers pushed for the win, buddies goalkeeper Trevor Carson made two outstanding saves to stop Kent and Tavernier.
Alfredo Morelos earned his first league start of the year because leading scorer Antonio Colak missed it due to a muscular injury. Ben Davies, who was injured, was replaced by midfielder Glen Kamara, James Sands moved back to central defence, and Rabbi Matondo was replaced by Scott Wright. Ayunga took the place of Alex Greive for St. Mirren, and he teamed up with Curtis Main to physically challenge Sands and 18-year-old King at Rangers centre defence. In the seventh minute, Rangers produced the first real opportunity. Midfielder Malik Tillman beat Saints defender Marcus Fraser to the ball by slipping it between his legs, but with only goalkeeper Trevor Carson to beat, he dragged his shot wide.
Prior to Kent receiving a booking from referee Clancy for diving inside the box following a challenge by Fraser, Ayunga nearly scored on a long-range attempt as the game dragged on. Tavernier levelled the score after a VAR review resulted in a penalty and the removal of the yellow card. In the final nine minutes, Carson stopped shots from Kent and Jack with saves before Rangers ran out of time and their title dreams were further dashed.
