Alejandro Garnacho scored a late winner to help Man Utd produce one of the narrow football results of the weekend in the Premier League. After Dan James (61) had canceled out Christian Eriksen’s first goal for Manchester United (14) with his first for the Whites against his former team, the Cottagers were on the verge of holding Erik ten Hag’s team to a draw when substitute Garnacho broke their hearts. The 18-year-old seized on Eriksen’s through ball with just seconds left and calmly finished past Bernd Leno for his first Premier League goal, following up on an impressive cameo in United’s 4-2 Carabao Cup victory over Aston Villa on Thursday.
Numerous times, Fulham snuck up on him; on one occasion, Willian set up Carlos Vinicius for a weak shot, which De Gea blocked; but too frequently, the final pass was absent. The visitors were more skillful and scored first after Casemiro dispossessed Tom Cairney. Eriksen then charged forward to finish the attack by sliding in Bruno Fernandes’ deflected cross-shot after having feed Anthony Martial earlier in the move. While Fulham kept up the pressure at the other end—Willian curled an attempt wide and Harry Wilson forced De Gea into another save—United should have increased their lead before the break.
The excellent Joao Palhinha forced a save from De Gea with an acrobatic effort before firing a header over the bar as Fulham continued to have opportunities as United fought to reclaim control of the game. Garnacho, however, would have the last say. The young player, who came on for Martial, looked menacing on United’s left flank. At one point, he collided with Antonee Robinson and appealed for a penalty, but the call was overturned. Then, in brilliant fashion, he scored the game-winning goal from Eriksen’s pass to give United the victory and offer yet another glimpse into his tantalizingly promising future.
