Joe Willock scored a sensational goal to help Newcastle produce one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the Premier League. The first half was unimpressive, with Armando Broja forcing a routine save at one end and Miguel Almiron volleying over at the other as the first 45 minutes finished inevitably goalless. The Magpies advanced significantly after the break, seeing an opportunity to take advantage of a Chelsea team that was playing below par, though Nick Pope was compelled to make a leaping save in the 65th minute to stop Conor Gallagher’s curling drive.
After Almiron went on a cursed run and found Willock two minutes later, Newcastle took the lead and will finish third in the Premier League going into the World Cup break. Chelsea, on the other hand, is lagging in the eighth. The fact that Lewis Hall, a teenager, made his first Premier League start and didn’t look completely out of place was the only solace for the visitors; however, an already depleted backline later lost Ruben Loftus-Cheek to injury.
For the first time since 2014, Newcastle has now won five straight Premier League games. They have also gone 10 games without a loss. Contrarily, Potter is the first manager of Chelsea to lose three straight league games since Jose Mourinho in November 2015, who, incidentally, was fired the following month. The hosts benefited greatly from Willock’s magnificent goal, which was his second in as many games, as Chelsea’s momentum had, albeit momentarily,
However, the in-form Almiron was able to seize the initiative when he deftly avoided a feeble challenge from Kalidou Koulibaly and then pushed the ball into Willock’s path, who rifled home a first-time shot in the 67th minute. Eddie Howe’s team is currently two points behind Man City in second place despite having 30 points this season, a total they did not reach until March of last year.
