Mohamed Salah scored a brace to help Liverpool produce one of the narrow football results of the weekend in the Premier League. In their previous two league games, Jurgen Klopp’s team had suffered shocking losses to relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest and Leeds. However, they got off to a quick start against Spurs, with in-form Salah giving them the lead after only 11 minutes. As Spurs started to build momentum, Alisson, the Liverpool goalkeeper, diverted a header from Ivan Perisic onto the post, and Ryan Sessegnon had a penalty appeal for a Trent Alexander-Arnold challenge ruled away. However, the Reds scored again just before halftime due to a gift from Eric Dier.
Salah (40) sprinted through to score his ninth goal in eight games after the center-back misjudged a head toward his own goal. For the second time this season, Tottenham was better after the interval. Alisson again pushed a Perisic shot over the woodwork before Harry Kane (70) scored a beautiful goal after being set up by substitute Dejan Kulusevski. Spurs frantically sought another late goal, and Rodrigo Bentancur and Harry Kane both came close, but Liverpool held on for their first away victory in the Premier League this year to move up to eighth and within seven points of fourth-placed Spurs with a game remaining.
Both of these teams have struggled to get going early in games this season, but Liverpool sprang into the scene. Within three minutes, Darwin Nunez forced Hugo Lloris to work hard in his 100th straight Premier League appearance for Spurs. The Reds appeared to be in perfect control at that point, but Tottenham, led by Antonio Conte, has a history of playing stronger after halftime this year. At the start of the second half, Alisson had to make a strong stop from a Dier header from a corner.
