New Everton boss Sean Dyche has defended the club after they failed to make any signings in the January transfer window. The Toffees were the only Premier League team without any new additions in January, despite their need to revitalize a group that is currently last in the standings after only three victories this year. On Deadline Day, the day after Dyche’s official appointment as manager, numerous attempts were made to sign players, however, they either failed due to competition from other teams or were unsuccessful. The owner of the team, Farhad Moshiri, pledged in an interview last week that they would sign a striker, but despite criticism, the former Clarets manager maintained it was not for lack of trying.
“I can promise you that since my appointment and arrival on Saturday, I have only witnessed hard effort, especially in the recruitment department,” Everton boss Sean Dyche said. “I frequently leave this place after midnight. The Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell, the owner, and the chairman have been on the phone nonstop. I can vouch for this because I was present to witness it all. Undoubtedly, there has been hard work. The requirement that they [new additions] must be superior to what we now have is something that, in my opinion, is overlooked. We have some really, really good players, in my opinion. Despite the fact that they may have lost their way, this team has some really great players.”
“Never have I been a fan of signing athletes just to sign them and then never seeing them again. Otherwise, I don’t see the sense in having them, and they have to be excellent enough to have an impact on what we do,” he added. “We put in a tonne of effort. I was there, I was active in it, I was calling agents, and we were doing everything we could to identify the players that could contribute. Numerous phone calls and offers were made, but for whatever reason, they didn’t end up where we wanted them to; that’s how things sometimes work.”
