Barcelona have completed the signing of Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City on a three-year deal. The transfer hasn’t been made public by either party, but given the player’s advanced age and the lengthy contract the 32-year-old was wanting, City has taken a practical stance consistent with previous events. Gundogan’s contract was slated to expire at the end of June, therefore he was negotiating a new one with City. The deal’s term for the 32-year-old, one year with an option for another 12, was a sticking issue, though. Gundogan is also a target for Arsenal.
The legendary former Borussia Dortmund midfielder won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and the Champions League during his seven years with City. Ilkay Gundogan, a recent addition to Barcelona, won three accolades during the 2022–23 season, aiding City in becoming only the second English team to capture the treble crown. It follows the deal between Man City and Chelsea to pay Mateo Kovacic £30 million, which would help make up for Gundogan’s exit.
It is believed that the price will be worth an initial £25 million guarantee plus an additional £5 million based on performance. Kovacic’s official addition to the treble-winning team from the previous season is anticipated soon. Kovacic joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in the summer of 2018, originally on a loan. The Croatian international has made 221 appearances for Chelsea and has four major championships to his name, including his fourth Champions League in 2021.
Even if Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich is interested in signing Kyle Walker this summer, the winger would like to remain at Manchester City. Walker’s current contract has one year left, and City has no intention of selling him this summer. Bernardo Silva’s desire to leave the club will not be impeded by Man City. The player and his representation must, as in the past, request a move and make a competitive offer to the treble winners for consideration. In addition to Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain is reportedly interested in signing the Portugal international.
