Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard has been sacked after less than a year in charge. Former Chelsea and Tottenham managers Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino have both been linked to the role, although it’s not clear which one of them may be persuaded to relocate to Villa Park. At Craven Cottage, when Villa fell to Fulham 3-0, it was announced that Gerrard had been fired. Villa has now lost six times in as few as 11 Premier League contests.
According to a statement from the team, “Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that head coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect. We want to express our appreciation to Steven for his dedication and hard work, and we wish him the best in the future.”
Following the firing of Gerrard, Villa announced on Friday that Gary McAllister, Neil Critchley, Tom Culshaw, Jordan Milsom, and Scott Mason had also left the team. The team will be led by first-team coach Aaron Danks for the Premier League match against Brentford on Sunday at Villa Park. After Dean Smith left Villa Park in November 2021 to be replaced by the former Liverpool player, Bruno Lage became the fourth manager in the top flight to be fired this season, joining Scott Parker, Thomas Tuchel, and Bruno Lage. Following Villa’s significant defeat in southwest London, Gerrard acknowledged he was in a “very difficult position.” Even though the former Rangers manager insisted he would not leave his position, Villa’s board moved quickly and left him with no other option.
“I’ve been messaging the fans for the past few weeks because I’m a trustworthy person and I know how disappointed and hurt they are. I know they’re not loving it right now, so we’ll see what happens after that. But as you and I both know, I’m in a very tough spot right now. We’ll just have to watch to see what happens. We’ll see what happens in the future, but football and quitting are not in my DNA,” Gerard continued.
