Lia Walti has signed a new contract with Arsenal Women after first joining in 2018, making 128 appearances. The Swiss midfielder won the FA Women’s League Cup in 2022/23 in addition to the Women’s Super League championship in the 2018–19 campaign. Walti has over 100 appearances for Switzerland and has served as the nation’s captain since this year. The 30-year-old will serve as the team’s captain for the World Cup this summer in Australia and New Zealand, just as she did in England for the 2022 European Championship.
“I’m thrilled and honored to pledge my future to Arsenal at this particular time,” Lia Walti said after signing a new Arsenal Women contract. “I have such deep links with both this club and the surrounding community since Arsenal means so lot to me and felt like home the day I joined. Being a member of Arsenal at this moment is thrilling, and I want to keep creating new experiences with this team.”
“Lia living with us at Arsenal makes me happy. She is one of the top midfielders in the world and offers so much to the team in terms of presence and leadership,” Arsenal Women’s head coach Jonas Eidevall said. “Throughout my tenure here, Lia has been a key member of this team, and I look forward to our continued collaboration to accomplish our objectives.”
“The fact that Lia has renewed her contract with us is wonderful news,” Clare Wheatley said. “When I express how happy I am that Lia will continue to wear the red and white going ahead, I know I speak for everyone at the club and all of our supporters. Lia is a crucial component of what we’re doing here at Arsenal.”
The Emirates Stadium will host five Women’s Super League games in the upcoming season, an increase of two from the current campaign, according to Arsenal. In addition to hosting Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester United this season, Jonas Eidevall’s team has hosted all of Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League games at the Emirates. In their most recent game at the Emirates, a Champions League semifinal loss to Wolfsburg on May 1, Arsenal Women played in front of a sold-out crowd.
