On Tuesday, AC Milan beat Torino on penalties to reach the Italian Cup quarterfinals, where it could face Serie A title rival Inter Milan. Milan converted both of its penalties after the match ended 0-0 and took the shootout 5-4, with Hakan Çalhanoğlu converting the winning penalty.
Tomás Rincón, Torino’s goalkeeper, who took the third penalty from his hand, had his attempt saved by Ciprian Tătăruşanu. Milan will face Inter or Fiorentina, who play in Florence on Wednesday. With the Rossoneri top of the table, the two Milan teams also lead the chase for the Serie A crown, three points ahead of second-place Inter.
For the quarterfinal, Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is usually the first choice but has been rested, will be suspended as he was shown a red card for dissent on the bench.
On Saturday, Milan beat Torino 2-0 in the league and that match also marked Zlatan Ibrahimović’s return from injury. The 39-year-old made his first start since Nov. 22 during the cup match, although he was taken off at halftime.
In the first half, there were few opportunities, but after the break, Milan came out more energized and hit the post twice in quick succession.
Apart from Çalhanoğlu, penalties were scored by Franck Kessié, Theo Hernández, Sandro Tonali, and Alessio Romagnoli. For Torino, Andrea Belotti, Saša Lukić, Lyanco, and goaltender Vanja Milinković-Savić have been successful.
