Jose Mourinho’s run of 43 unbeaten Serie A games in a row comes to an end as AC Milan beat Roma by a 2-1 match score at the Olimpico. The guests were offered a chance to secure back-to-back away league wins in Sunday’s clash against Roma for the first time since March 2005. And Stefano Pioli’s men almost fired themselves into a prime position to do so inside the opening five minutes.
Unfortunately for the visitors, some neat interplay between Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Rafael Leao ended with Franck Kessie hammering his effort wide of the post. 40 years old Zlatan Ibrahimovic stepped up to light 25 minutes into the game scoring his 400th domestic career goal from the free-kick.
Before the break, Milan came close to double their advantage, but Leao’s header into an empty net was ruled out by the linesman for an offside. Throughout the match, VAR was at the centre of action. Ibrahimovic’s second goal of the night was chalked off for offside after the VAR review before the legendary Swede fell in the box and it was VAR again to confirm the penalty kick which Kessie converted sending Rui Patricio the wrong way to make it 2-0.
With 25 minutes remaining on the clock, Roma were handed a lifeline when Theo Hernandez’s foul on Lorenzo Pellegrini resulted in a second yellow for the Frenchman leaving the guests outnumbered. However, although Stephan El Shaarawy did score a late consolation, the Italy international couldn’t prevent Mourinho’s side from losing.
After 11 Serie A fixtures, AC Milan now equals Napoli with 31 points while The Special One’s squad is 12 points behind the leaders. Watch football highlights of Serie A game in which AC Milan beat AS Roma.
