Mohamed Salah scored the fastest ever hattrick to help Liverpool produce one of the high-scoring football scores of the weekend in the Champions League. Scott Arfield gave Rangers the lead, but the outstanding Roberto Firmino equalised it, and Liverpool took control after the break, scoring six consecutive goals, including three in six minutes from Salah the substitute, to prevent the hosts from advancing to the round of 16. 55 minutes after Firmino’s second goal gave Liverpool the lead, Darwin Nunez scored his second goal in as many games thanks to the Brazilian’s assist. Following two more merciless finishes against the helpless Rangers defense, Salah grabbed control and scored the first of his three goals in the final 75 minutes to win the match.
The Rangers’ night took a turn for the worse after such a promising beginning as they lost Connor Goldson and Ryan Jack to injuries in addition to giving up the seventh goal to Harvey Elliott which was ultimately decided by VAR. Rangers suffered their most significant loss in a competitive game at Ibrox as a result of Liverpool’s outstanding second half. The manager of the Gers, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, was perplexed by the outcome.
He killed the ball out of the sky down the right and poked a wonderful finish despite an almost impossible angle for his first goal, which was a classic Salah finish. As part of a beautiful buildup that saw Thiago, Firmino, and Diogo Jota contribute, Salah scored his second goal, sending another beautiful shot past Allan McGregor. A minute later, Salah intercepted another Jota ball and fired one into the far corner to cap off the cameo of all cameos. Rangers’ defensive line was all over the place as Elliott scored his first Champions League goal after VAR overturned an incorrectly signaled offside on Jota, but the pain did not end there for the Rangers. Rangers and Liverpool were now competing in a different sport.
