Heung-Min Son scored a brace to help Tottenham produce one of the narrow football results of the midweek action in the Champions League. After Son’s strikes and Harry Kane’s penalty, Spurs recovered remarkably from Daichi Kamada’s first goal to give Antonio Conte’s team a 3-1 halftime lead over Germany. The spurs were then cruising to win. After Tuta received two cautions in the span of three minutes for fouls on Son, the visitors were down to 10 men just 15 minutes into the second half. Faride Alidou, a replacement, headed in a corner in the 87th minute to give Frankfurt a chance to tie the score. Then, in the 92nd minute, Kane missed a penalty to seal the victory, and Alidou almost made up for it before Hugo Lloris made the save.
As a result of Kamada penalizing Eric Dier’s error, Frankfurt took the lead in the 14th minute, ruining Spurs’ first home game of October. Sebastian Rode of Frankfurt was able to set up the Japan international, who rolled the ball into an empty net, thanks to the England center-heavy back’s touch in the area. However, Spurs came back strongly and scored three goals in just 16 minutes, beginning with Son’s clinical finish (20) after Kane put him through.
Son’s thundering first-time volley from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s cross made it 3-1 in the 36th minute. Following Tuta’s dismissal, Tottenham appeared to be in for a comfortable last 30 minutes. However, the opposition scored with three minutes left to set up a tight conclusion. Bryan Gil, a Spurs replacement, was then awarded a penalty in stoppage time after being struck by Hrvoje Smolcic, but the drama persisted as Kane missed the opportunity. For the benefit of the Spurs striker, Conte’s team managed to hold on for the victory and take command of Group D.
