AC Milan Zlatan Ibrahimovic revealed that he played this season through a serious knee injury to help the club win their first Serie A title in 11 years. The Swede underwent knee surgery just days after winning the league title. He is expected to be out for up to eight months following the procedure. The club said in a statement that the surgery was a complete success. Ibrahimovic is out of contract in the summer and has expressed his desire to stay for another season after scoring eight goals in the Serie A. It was his second Serie A title after winning during his first spell at the club. Their neighbors Inter Milan won the Serie A last season.
“I have never suffered so much on and off the pitch. Barely slept for six months because of the pain,” AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic said. “I was only able to train with the team 10 times in the last six months. For the last six months, I played without an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] in my left knee. Took more than 20 injections in six months. Emptied the knee once a week for six months. Painkillers every day for six months.”
“I made something impossible something possible. In my mind I had only one objective, to make my teammates and coach champions of Italy because I made them a promise. Today I have a new ACL and another trophy,” he added.
