Rangers have confirmed the sacking of head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst after a year at Ibrox. Rangers lost all six of its group-stage matches in the Champions League, including a 7-1 thrashing by Liverpool at home. As a result, the club is currently nine points behind champions Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. It is thought that no choice has been made regarding the Rangers’ backroom staff’s future. Along with Van Bronckhorst, Dave Vos, Roy Makaay, Arno Philips, and Yori Bosschaart signed in November. Former City Football Group coach Ceri Bowley joined in the summer.
However, it is anticipated that those that joined the Dutchman would go, similar to past management changes at Ibrox. Only Pedro Caixinha and Paul Le Guen had shorter tenures as permanent managers for the club than Van Bronckhorst, who signed a three-and-a-half-year contract to succeed Steven Gerrard in November.
“Today, the Rangers Football Club announced that manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst had left the organization. The board would like to officially express its gratitude to Gio for all of his efforts since being hired as manager,” the club said in a statement. “Gio, who joined the team a little over a year ago, guided the team to a fifth European championship and the Scottish Cup in May. He also helped the group qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 12 years. Unfortunately, recent results and performances have fallen short of expectations, and the board decided today to sever the manager’s contract. The process of finding new management is underway.”
