Coventry City won their third game in succession as they produced one of the comfortable football scores of the weekend in the Championship. The Potters, who suffered their second home loss in as many days, dominated but in vain. In the second half, Gustavo Hamer set up Jamie Allen’s first goal and added a second as the guests reduced the deficit to safety to just one point. The result means that the Sky Blues continue their five-match unbeaten road streak and their string of four straight road clean sheets.
The hosts, who lost to Rotherham 1-0 at home in midweek, hoped to respond favourably and got off to a fast start. After 17 minutes, veteran defender Phil Jagielka nearly started the scoring, but his creative flick-on from a Lewis Baker corner hit the crossbar. Fosu came close from range twice quickly after the half-hour mark as the early Potters pressure persisted. The home team was in complete control, yet their first shot on goal didn’t come until the 48th minute.
Dwight Gayle, who turned 33 this past week, saw Ben Wilson easily stop his drilled volley. The Sky Blues scored their game’s first goal under fairly fortunate circumstances six minutes after the restart. Allen seized on a Hamer through ball, and Harry Clarke’s last-ditch effort assisted in lifting the effort over Joe Bursik. The Potters fell farther behind a few minutes after the hour mark, despite Alex Neil calling the changes.
Hamer brilliantly added a goal to his earlier assist by skipping past two players and scoring. Then, Coventry experienced a perfect afternoon that ended in the 75th minute. When key player Callum O’Hare made his season-opening comeback from injury and came off the bench, it gave manager Mark Robins a huge lift. Coventry remained steadfast to maintain a sixth clean sheet in their previous seven games despite the best efforts of the hosts.
