Chelsea overcame their opening day defeat to produce one of the comfortable football scores of the weekend in the Women’s Super League. Fran Kirby opened the scoring in the 42nd minute before Maren Mjelde doubled their advantage from the penalty spot. Chelsea Women head coach Emma Hayes said they could not hit a barn door in the last game and they were clinical this time around. Manchester City had a few chances but was wasteful.

Managers Reaction
Chelsea head coach Emma Hayes: “Although sometimes you have to do that, I think our performance in the second half was what I was anticipating from us. It was a lot more controlled, and we controlled all areas. However, I felt that the first half was overplayed; we went from underplaying a week before to overplaying this week. While it is the second game, I initially believed it to be the second game of the season. We must strike a balance.”
Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor: “I thought we played really well in the first half, controlled most of the game, had some fantastic opportunities and should have taken advantage of a few of them. Berger made some excellent saves, and she’s not awful when you’re shooting shots from 20 to 25 yards, either. Although it was disappointing to concede the goal, the intermission was positive and we really ran after the ball and engaged, which may be drained some of our energy for the second half. Naturally, there will be a result when you put a lot of effort into a game like that.”
