Arsenal Women head coach Jonas Eidevall believes that their meeting with eight-time champions Lyon will be a reality check. After three games in the Women’s Super League, Arsenal is still unbeaten, having scored nine goals while allowing none to be allowed. Beth Mead’s outstanding accomplishments for club and country over the last year earned her the title of runner-up for the women’s Ballon d’Or on Monday.
“I’m really looking forward to it because it serves as a great reality check for where we are right now, and that is always very exciting to see because no matter what (happens) tomorrow, we will know exactly where we are at and what we need to keep improving on, as well as what we are already good at,” Arsenal Women head coach Jonas Eidevall said. “I believe that this game will be considerably different than, say, the game versus Reading. We must anticipate that, while Lyon will be in the game’s driving seat at times, we will also be. The game will be extremely different from the games we will play in the league since we will have to cope with more shots on target and set-pieces than we have recently.”
Arsenal lost to Barcelona 4-0 at home and 4-1 away at the group stage of the previous season, but they still managed to advance from their group and lose to Wolfsburg in the next round. Although Caitlin Foord thinks the team has improved since last year, she also thinks Lyon might be an even tougher opponent than Barcelona.
