Paris Saint-Germain is close to finalizing the exit of head coach Mauricio Pochettino despite leading the club to the French title. They won the league by 15 points, the largest margin in the top five leagues. Their capitulation in the Champions League after holding a two-goal lead over Real Madrid could end up costing the former Tottenham boss his job. Karim Benzema scored a second-half hattrick against the French club in the second leg to eliminate them in the Round of 16. Pochettino was considered by the Manchester United board for the position vacated by Ralf Rangnick but instead opted for Erik ten Hag.
“It’s no surprise. This has been coming for months. You can go back to last summer even; there were approaches made to Pochettino from Tottenham about a return to north London. We knew he wasn’t entirely happy at PSG. He wasn’t entirely happy in Paris. He spent a long time living in a hotel, which didn’t help matters,” Tony Williams said after reports of Paris Saint-Germain finalizing the exit of Mauricio Pochettino. “Over the course of this season, even with PSG streaking towards the Ligue 1 title, things haven’t felt right. Things haven’t clicked; the football has been appalling. The feeling has been for a long time that Pochettino was not going to continue beyond this summer. The fact that we have appeared to arrive at the point of his departure now is not going to surprise anyone.”
