Cameron Pring and Joe Williams helped Bristol City produce one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the Championship. The Robins hadn’t triumphed at Rotherham since 1995, but their own goal, Joe Williams, and Cameron Pring broke the pattern, allowing them to not only beat Rotherham but also pass them in the Championship standings. For Nigel Pearson’s team, it was their first league victory since the middle of October, and they took advantage of their opportunities at the New York Stadium. Ben Wiles fired the first attempt that was on goal for Rotherham when they first started pressing. He sprinted across the middle of the field, but after switching to his right foot, he took a direct shot at goalkeeper Max O’Leary.
On minute 14, Wes Harding’s attempt to block Nakhi Wells’ cross from Bristol City was met with disaster for the Millers against the flow of play at the opposite end. Bristol City thereafter took the lead. With a strong response, Rotherham leveled after 25 minutes. Chiedozie Ogbene received a perfectly placed back post cross from Brooke Norton-Cuffy, and the Republic of Ireland international made no errors. 30 minutes after reentering along the left side, the visitors took the lead once more. Viktor Johansson palmed Tommy Conway’s cross into his path as he crept to the byline, and Williams converted it from close range.
Alex Scott of City had the first significant opportunity of the second half when he pounced on Lee Peltier’s muddled clearing and forced Johansson into a spectacular diving save. On the following attack, Pring’s deflection of Scott’s whipped cross into the net gave City the victory after 73 minutes. Wiles had a terrific opportunity thanks to Rotherham substitute Georgie Kelly, but his drive from the edge of the box was deflected for a corner. Another replacement for the home team, Scott High, produced a long-range shot that forced O’Leary to dive to block it.
