Jesse Lingard scored as Nottingham Forest produced one of the shocking football scores of the midweek action in the Carabao Cup. As Spurs put up yet another subpar first-half performance, Forest was fully deserving of the victory as Taiwo Awoniyi hit the post in the first half. Lingard and Joe Worrall also came within inches of scoring. However, Lodi scored after the break past Fraser Forster before Lingard, with a close-range header a few minutes later, finished off another counterattack for the home team. With 15 minutes remaining, Forest’s Orel Mangala was sent for two bookable offenses, and as Spurs attempted to build a comeback, Richarlison, the substitute who came in for an injured Harry Kane, had a goal disallowed for offside.
Spurs, who have recently struggled with first-half performances, had another unimpressive start, and Forest persisted despite Lingard’s shot being deflected over and Forster’s point-blank stop on Worrall. With the exception of when Ivan Perisic’s cross found Matt Doherty at the far post and the Irishman’s first-time shot was turned aside by Wayne Hennessey, Spurs managed to enter the game but never truly threatened before the break. Before Forster received a well-deserved breakthrough in the 50th minute, Lingard pricked his hands. Lodi received the ball from Forest after regaining possession high up the field. He was given the opportunity to advance toward the goal and make a cut inside before curling an exquisite finish into the net.
Kane was abruptly replaced in what appeared to be a pre-planned move, which did little to improve the Spurs’ prospects of mounting a comeback. Mangala’s dismissal from the game in the 76th minute after receiving a second yellow for scything down Richarlison ruined Forest’s evening. However, it was not expensive because Spurs were unable to stage a comeback when Richarlison had a goal disallowed for offside.
