Manchester United came from behind twice as they produced one of the high-scoring football scores of the midweek action in the Carabao Cup. All six goals were scored after the half, with Erik ten Hag’s team behind twice before Bruno Fernandes’ deflected goal gave them their first lead and Scott McTominay added the insurance. The outcome somewhat atones for Villa’s 3-1 loss to United in Unai Emery’s debut match on Sunday. After a dull first 45 minutes, the game picked up after the break. Ollie Watkins scored the game’s first goal, and Anthony Martial equalized just 19 seconds later. After Diogo Dalot’s own goal gave Villa the lead again, Marcus Rashford netted a second equalizer.
The only action in the boring first half came from Bruno Fernandes’ 40-yard field goal attempt from close to the touchline and Douglas Luiz’s futile corner-kick attempts. Both the game’s and the players’ thinking speeds were slow. The second half then started. There were hints of handball when Luiz won the ball back in midfield, and Jacob Ramsey then feed Watkins. After being left off of England’s World Cup roster, the striker displayed excellent composure to dink the ball over Martin Dubravka, who was making his debut.
When the equalizer was scored, the sizable away crowd was still yelling in support. Following his suspension, Fernandes sprinted down the right before delivering a square pass to Martial, who had the easy chore of putting the ball past Robin Olsen. These five-time winners of this trophy were playing as though they wanted to be in the tournament, but that was just the beginning of the drama. Leon Bailey, who was on the field as a substitute, received Ashley Young’s tease-cross. The nod was deflected by Dalot into his own net. This time, Villa had the advantage for six minutes before Rashford, outmuscling a fumbling Tyrone Mings and the goalie, equalized. Olsen was forced to make another save from Rashford and Harry Maguire as Old Trafford erupted once more.
