Bournemouth won their first game in six as they produced one of the high-scoring football scores of the weekend in the Carabao Cup. On the south coast, Bournemouth took a 2-0 lead with to goals from Jamal Lowe and Junior Stanislas before Everton’s substitute Demarai Gray cut the deficit in half and gave Frank Lampard’s team hope. However, two quick goals from Cherries substitutes Jaidon Anthony (82) and Emiliano Marcondes (78) ensured Gary O’Neil’s team would advance to the round of 16. On Thursday, Bournemouth will learn about their opponent for the following round.
After losing 4-3 to Leeds on Saturday, Bournemouth made nine changes to their lineup. In the seventh minute, Lowe’s right-footed shot from inside the area rebounded off James Garner and looped over Asmir Begovic into the Everton goal. The second period’s second minute saw Bournemouth extend their advantage. As he attempted to collect a pass from Begovic, Mason Holgate lost his balance, which allowed Ryan Christie to pounce and feed Lowe. Stanislas, the captain of the Cherries, was assisted by the 28-year-old at the back post, and with a simple tap-in, he scored his first goal since March of last year.
A stunning move featuring two substitutions gave Everton a lifeline with just over 20 minutes remaining. Gray received the ball from Neal Maupay after Iwobi had assisted him, and the winger composed himself before bending a right-footed shot past Travers and into the far corner. Everton subsequently attempted to equalize by firing a shot over the crossbar, but the next goal, which restored the home team’s two-goal lead, came from Everton. The score was 4-1 and the game was over four minutes later. Nathan Patterson dallied on the ball, which gave Dembele the opportunity to pounce, and Everton made another error at the back. The Cherries sub maintained his composure and found Anthony, who calmly placed a left-footed shot into the bottom corner after taking a touch.
