Denmark has revealed that they will wear a training kit with messages supporting human rights at the World Cup in Qatar next year. The move comes after FIFA has received heavy criticism for awarding the hosting rights to Qatar. Amnesty has accused Qatar of failure to implement its own laws aimed at improving conditions for migrant workers. The Danish FA also revealed that they will limit the number of trips undertaken by players and staff to Qatar.
“DBU has long been strongly critical of the World Cup in Qatar, but now we are intensifying our efforts and critical dialogue further so that we take advantage of the fact that we are qualified to work for more change in the country.” Jacob Jensen, the DBU’s managing director, said about plans for Denmark for the Qatar World Cup.
“Kick it Out is committed to supporting football in becoming a game where everyone belongs.” Chris Paouros, Kick it Out chair said. “Holding the world’s biggest sporting and football event in a country where LGBTQ+ people are criminalized is a challenging concept for us both as a football charity and as an organization which has built a reputation around fighting for inclusion.”
