Toni Duggan believes that Everton can take the leap and qualify for the Champions League. The Everton forward recently resigned for the club after her contract with Atletico Madrid ran out. She will be returning to the Women’s Super League after spending four years in Spain. Duggan feels that Everton are capable of ending the dominance of manchester city, Chelsea, and Arsenal in the league.
“We have not hidden away from that, I think you have heard (Everton manager) Willie (Kirk) speak about it as well – that is the aim,” new Everton signing Toni Duggan said. “We want to break down the teams like Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City. They have had many years building the team, and they have been really successful over the past few years. Everton are at that stage now to take the next step.”
Duggan has 76 caps for England but has been out of the national side for some time now. She secured a move back to England in a bid to win her place back. Everton finished 16 points behind Arsenal in the third and final qualifying spot last season. Although that could be a big gap to bridge over the season, she hopes to leapfrog manchester united at the very least.
“You will also look at the likes of Manchester United, they are trying to break into that as well,” Duggan added. “It is going to be a difficult year, we know that, but I don’t think we are going to shy away from saying our ambition is to be in the Champions League. I feel that is where Everton Women’s football club belongs.”
