Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has revealed that Kevin De Bruyne has undergone minor surgery on his eye socket. He said that the midfielder will join the squad on Monday. Previously, Martinez said that De Bruyne could miss his side’s opener against Russia on June 12. Belgium are currently the Number 1 ranked team in the world and one of the favorites for Euro 2020.
“It went very well, very positively. We are looking forward to Monday when he will join our squad,” the Belgium boss said about Kevin De Bruyne surgery. “That small intervention was necessary with a view to the long term. He will not need a long recovery. The operation only took 20 minutes. The medical staff is satisfied with the result. De Bruyne is now doing well, that’s all.”
Kevin De Bruyne suffered facial fractures when he collided with Anthony Rudiger during the Champions League final a week ago. The Belgian maestro was distraught after being substituted and was seen in tears on the touchline. Martinez has said that De Bruyne will be forced to wear a protective mask. Jan Vetonghen had sported a similar mask during the World Cup a few years ago.
“De Bruyne is unlikely to be fit for that first match so whoever replaces him will have to show he’s ready,” Martinez said. “We made a decision about his mask. It will be one of the producers who made Jan Vertonghen’s mask. We were very satisfied with that. I would say that until next week we won’t know exactly where we are with Kevin. Now, allow him to relax.”
Belgium have been drawn into the same group as Russia, Denmark and Finland. They begin their campaign against Russia in St Petersburg before facing Denmark on June 17 and Finland on June 21.
