Harvey Eliott scored the only goal of the game to help Liverpool produce one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the FA Cup. On Saturday, Brighton defeated Jurgen Klopp’s team in the Premier League, but a significantly altered Liverpool lineup snapped a three-game winless streak across all competitions. In the second half, Wolves made a strong effort but were unsuccessful in tying the score. Anfield’s first game had generated controversy. In that match, Wolves had a late potential winner disallowed for offside that VAR could not review due to a lost camera angle, and this game started under similarly bizarre conditions with a power outage.
The moment the lights went out, Adama Traore was ready to strike the box with a cross. Soon after the break, Elliott’s rasping long-range shot caught Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa off guard, replacing the absurd with the exquisite. Liverpool played more fluidly in the first half and nearly added a second goal, but the flag was raised after Fabio Carvalho scored. The visitors did not require the second goal, despite Raul Jimenez’s close-range header being deflected over late in the game.
“Everyone responded in that way, and it was the response we needed to display. The game was entirely different than it had been before. I’m overjoyed about that. Each individual performance was strong,” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said. “That’s how it feels when you play well and win, I told the boys after the game. Because of this, we are really content. It was a good game, and even if we only advanced to the next round because of pure desire, it was a significant indication that such things are indeed achievable. Harvey witnessed something that not many others have. In that situation, I wouldn’t have anticipated being shot.”
