Aaron Ramsey missed his penalty as Eintracht Frankfurt produced one of the narrow football scores of the Europa League. Rangers were hoping to win their second European trophy in the club’s history. Joe Aribo opened the scoring for the Scottish side in the 57th minute before Rafael Borre equalized in the 69th minute. Kevin Trapp made a point-blank save off a Ryan Kent shot in the 118th minute to take the match into penalties.
Managers Reaction
Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst: “It is never nice to lose, everyone is hurt and disappointed. Aaron, of course, was disappointed but he took responsibility to take the penalty. You can make it or miss it and unfortunately for us, he didn’t make it but you want players taking penalties who are ready and comfortable also. If you play a lot of big games, big finals, we will have memories that last forever when you win them but when you lose it will hurt a lot.”
Trevor Steven: “I don’t think Rangers played to their best, it was a war of attrition at times, but they could have easily won it in extra time. There were opportunities, but that’s football. Ramsey will be cast as the villain, but it has been a brilliant effort on a brilliant journey. It’s so disappointing for the players to get this far, with the effort they’ve put in. How do they regroup? Reality will kick in very quickly and as a professional, they have to mentally get back to Glasgow for a cup final, and they’ll be pleased they’ve got something else to go for to focus their minds. Ramsey looked a bit tentative going up to the penalty, and he didn’t strike it particularly well, and Trapp didn’t have to do much to save it. But nine times out of 10 Ramsey would score.”
