After spending this season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, Gareth Bale is set to return to Real Madrid. He will complete a one-year contract before retirement in the summer of 2022.
Bale has had a tense relationship with Real and the club’s fans for a long time. Despite his track record of success in the Spanish capital, especially in Champions League finals.
Bale’s relationship with Zinedine Zidane had worsened terribly by 2018. But when the Frenchman departed shortly after the club’s Champions League victory over Liverpool in Kyiv that year, it appeared that the Welshman would get a fresh start.
The 31-year-health old’s has been a source of annoyance since his time in Spain. And since Zidane’s return in 2019, he was reduced to a reserve player. He had spent the remainder of last season on the bench.
Due to a lack of opportunities under Zidane, he was able to return to Tottenham on loan, which has given him valuable game time, especially since February, to boost his match sharpness in preparation for Euro 2020 with Wales.
Gareth Bale has no wish to return to Real Madrid
This summer, Bale has made no secret of his wish to return to Real Madrid.
“I had to be match-fit going into the Euros. The initial intention was to play for Spurs for a season before returning to Real Madrid for another year after the Euros. During the March international break. My goal is to go back; that’s as far as I’ve prepared, he said.
According to AS, Bale’s unique fitness regimen this season restricted him to three days of training a week, plus a recovery day, to avoid injury relapses. He’s only played in a few major matches and has made no secret of the fact that Euro 2020 is his highest priority in the dressing room.
It’s been mentioned that his ambition is to see out the last year of his Real contract. Whether that means playing or not. Given that Zidane is expected to leave again. And then retire at the end of next season when he’ll be just a few weeks away from turning 33.
