Sevilla beat Alaves 1-0 (0-0) at their Sanchez Pizjuan stadium in the final game of the Spanish La Liga season. The Argentine Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez scored the last goal of the Spanish football championship season in the second minute of the referee’s extra time, right before the match ended.
Sevilla finished with 77 points after Papu Gomez netted a stoppage-time winner. That is one more than the previous record set by the squad in 2014-15 when it was coached by Unai Emery, the former PSG and Arsenal coach who is now with Villarreal.
Sevilla had secured a Champions League berth a few weeks earlier and had narrowly reached the championship chase before struggling in the last few rounds.
The squad of Julen Lopetegui finished two points behind Barcelona in the third position.
Alaves finished the season in 16th position, four points clear of the drop zone. It had already clinched a position in the top division.
Atletico Madrid defeated Valladolid 2-1 on Saturday to win its first league title in seven years. It finished two points clear of Real Madrid, the defending champion. Granada hosted Getafe in an earlier match on Sunday. The match, which had no bearing on the outcome, ended goallessly. They had previously drawn 0-0. Granada came in the ninth position, while Getafe came in 15th.
The home team ended the season with a five-game losing streak. Four losses, and a point in the final game, good for 46 points and ninth place in the standings. Getafe came in 15th place with 38 points, while Alaves came in 16th place with the same number.
Huesca, Valladolid, and Eibar will leave the first division next season. Returning to La Liga Espanyol and Mallorca, as well as the winner of the playoffs between the clubs finishing third and sixth in the second division competition.
