Sevilla Transfer News | Jules Kounde, a Sevilla defender, has hinted that he may quit the club this summer to win big championships. Following an outstanding season for Julen Lopetegui’s side, the 22-year-old is one of Europe’s most sought-after center-backs.
Real Madrid and Manchester United have long been fans of the Frenchman, who has been called up to Didier Deschamps’ Euro 2020 team this summer, while The Athletic reported earlier this month on Arsenal’s interest in him. Addressing at a news conference at France’s Clairefontaine base, Kounde stated that, though he has not decided on his future, he believes that leaving his present LaLiga employers this summer is still an option.
‘This summer, I might have to switch clubs.’ ‘I haven’t made any decisions,’ Kounde remarked.
‘My ambition is to grow into a great club that is continuously striving to improve and win trophies. To be able to begin each season by convincing oneself that you aim to win a certain prize. I might have to relocate, but that isn’t important right now.’
This season, Kounde’s value has grown. He made 49 appearances for a team that ended in the Champions League positions, only two points behind Barcelona. Only Atletico Madrid and city rivals Real Madrid surrendered fewer league goals than Sevilla in 2020-21. Thanks to the France international’s good connection with Brazilian Diego Carlos.
When asked when he realized he was developing into a key potential, Kounde replied, ‘Perhaps when I came to Sevilla and started playing more and more, as well as with the introduction of the Champions League. It’s always been something in the back of my mind.’ I’ve always believed in it and worked hard for it. To own it. Because of that goal in the sights, I was able to have the performances I did at Sevilla. Thanks also to this club, which has been supportive, and my teammates, who have consistently pushed me.’
Real Madrid was reportedly interested in signing Kounde last month. The futures of Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos still up in the air.
Man United is also interested in signing Kounde, with the hope of teaming him with Harry Maguire next season. His height and £68 million release clause are stumbling blocks.
Despite the return of William Saliba from his loan spell at Nice, rumors claim Arsenal is looking for a new right-sided center-back. Kounde is said to be a target, a lack of European action next season might hurt their prospects.
