Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley has denied interest in Manchester United and Liverpool. Staveley stated that her consortium chose Newcastle because the price was less than ten times that of Manchester United and Liverpool. Staveley, who owns a 10% share in Newcastle United, is fresh off Newcastle’s Carabao Cup Final defeat to Manchester United.
“We knew we wanted a club with strong fans when we looked at Newcastle. We got it. We also wanted a club that we could afford because we (Staveley and husband Mehrdad Ghoudoussi) are PIF partners,” Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley said. “We don’t have a lot of money. We’re the bad partner, and that influences a lot of decisions. We did not choose the fantastic Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, or Liverpool. I’m a huge Liverpool fan, and we wanted to buy them, but we walked into a Newcastle game and asked, “Why spend X billion when you can spend £350 million on Newcastle?”
Staveley boasted after Newcastle’s Wembley defeat to Manchester United that the club will win the Premier League and the Champions League in the future. Only Manchester United and Chelsea have spent more on players in three transfer windows since taking control in October 2021. Newcastle, on the other hand, is already dealing with FFP and needs fresh sponsorship deals and additional revenue to offer the recruitment staff more spending power in future transfer windows. Staveley also indicated that the club is investigating the possibility of multi-club ownership, similar to the City Group arrangement at Manchester City.
“Newcastle has been saying for a long that they are nearing the end of their FFP – until they can generate fresh cash to give them extra spending power,” Keith Downie said. “The commercial department has been working on it for months, but it’s important to note that the staff in that area is still in its early stages of development and expansion. Newcastle will need at least another five or six new signings to compete in Europe next season, therefore new sponsorship deals and revenue streams must be disclosed in the coming months to push back the restrictions of FFP.”
