Manchester United is on the lookout for forwards and right-backs in the January transfer window. One of the few forward players United has shown interest in is Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven. Before pursuing a move for Antony from Ajax in an £86 million deal, United held negotiations about signing Gakpo in the summer. Gakpo impressed in the World Cup as he scored three goals for the Netherlands in Qatar before they were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by Argentina on penalties. United is leery of targets being given inflated prices in January, especially following a World Cup.
Any transfer for the 23-year-old “must be a record transfer,” according to Marcel Brands, director of football at PSV. After Cristiano Ronaldo left Manchester United last month, manager Erik ten Hag stated that United wanted to add a forward but “only when we discover the perfect player.” Several right-backs are being watched by United as well, although a move for one will probably rely on whether Aaron Wan-Bissaka goes. Wan-Bissaka, whose contract with the club expires in the summer of 2024 but which the organization has the option to extend for another year, has played just four minutes this season and has not been in Ten Hag’s plans.
United spent more than £200 million over the summer while being mindful of FFP regulations. A loan deal has not been ruled out if a long-term goal is not available in the window, but United’s main focus on transfers has always been the summer window.
